MANDATORY PREREQUISITE: All students who enroll in this course must have completed the Making Math Real: Overview K-12, the 9 Lines Intensive, and The 4 Operations and the 400 Math Facts Part 1

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE 9 LINES: It is now a mandatory prerequisite to have also completed Making Math Real: 9 Lines Intensive as this course provides the complete structure for teaching and developing automaticity for the 100 multiplication facts, which greatly supports the content of the 4 Operations & the 400 Math Facts Part 2 course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course continues the fundamental development from the Making Math Real: The 4 Operations and the 400 Math Facts Part 1 course for implementing a comprehensive, practical, systematic, and simultaneous multisensory structured methodology in basic mathematics.  It is designed for educational therapists, special educators, and elementary and secondary classroom teachers.  Parents and those who consider themselves non-math majors are especially encouraged to enroll.

This course provides the second part of the essential foundation upon which all mathematics will develop: the 4 operations and the 400 math facts.  These are the bases for cognitive development K-5, and all mathematical applications through algebra and beyond.  Over the course of 12 half-days, participants learn how to provide students with the second part of this crucial foundation in a dynamic, innovative, intensive, hands-on approach that makes learning successful, fun, and accessible for all students.

Topics include comprehensive methods for teaching the acquisition of all math facts for division with full units in the concept-applications of multiplication and division problem solving (single-digit and double-digit multipliers and divisors). Extension and enrichment activities for each unit are presented.  These methods are simplified, practical and ready for immediate professional use in classrooms, private practice or at home.

Course emphasis will be on all included concept-applications presented in their correct scope and sequence across the grades including:

MULTIPLICATION

  • The 4 concepts of multiplication
  • Area and perimeter
  • Square numbers and their roots through 100
  • Single-digit multipliers with and without renaming
  • Double-digit multipliers with 2 and 3-digit multiplicands
  • Triple-digit multipliers

DIVISION

  • Concepts of division
  • Long division: single-digit divisors
  • Long division: double-digit divisors

Extensive color-coding is a critical element of the structure. Please bring 4 colored pens or pencils in blue, green, red and black.
