Making Math Real: Overview |

(1 semester academic units) IMPORTANT NOTE: This course is the mandatory prerequisite overview for all other Making Math Real courses and is not grade level specific. The Overview provides all educators, kindergarten to college, the pedagogical foundations and practical applications of implementing and maintaining a comprehensive and fully structured multisensory methodology in mathematics. Participants will learn how and why this multisensory structured approach is powerful, successful, unique, and entirely different from the way math has been traditionally taught. MMR is a developmental program wherein each new mathematical development directly builds the foundation for the next. Although it is possible to take most of the Making Math Real courses after completing the Overview, we strongly recommend that the courses are taken in sequence: CLICK HERE TO VIEW RECOMMENDED COURSE SEQUENCES GUIDE Overview participants will learn to break math down to its concrete, core elements using hands-on, manipulatives-based activities demonstrated by the instructor. This course provides simplified, comprehensive foundations for a practical, systematic, and multisensory structured program in basic mathematics that is aligned with the California State Standards. It is designed for educational therapists, special educators, and elementary and secondary classroom teachers. Parents and those who consider themselves non-math majors are especially encouraged to enroll. The Overview course will be divided into three parts: Pedagogy, Strand 1, and Strand 2. In the Pedagogy section, participants will learn the research-based background of cognitive science and theory that supports this multisensory structured approach. Emphasis will be on identifying and understanding all the phases of processing and their respective roles in successful teaching and learning of mathematics. In the second section, participants will learn about Strand 1, Concept-Procedure Integration. Strand 1 emphasizes comprehension while constructing decoding and encoding of mathematical symbols and codes. Concept-Procedure Integration is divided into two parts that span k-12 instruction. The first part covers elementary school development and the second covers pre-algebra through calculus, and this course will address both. Concept-Procedure Integration for the elementary grades is fully hands-on and manipulatives-based, and is specifically developed through the systematic guidance from the concrete to the abstract. Participants will be guided through four hands-on content areas in which they will directly experience how it feels to teach and learn at the concrete, semi-concrete, semi-abstract, and abstract levels. Lastly, an additional emphasis will be on the transition to algebraic processing and development. In algebra, instructional focus must be on specific incrementation integrated into the scope and sequence for each content area. The demonstration of this specific incrementation will be modeled with a unit on integers. In the third and final section of the course, participants will learn about Strand 2, Sensory-Cognitive Development. The second strand provides the methods for developing perceptual and associative tools for increasing processing fluency and retention. Emphasis will be on on the 9 Lines, a multiplication fact acquisition strategy that builds sensory-cognitive development. These techniques are designed to reach the full diversity of learning styles. Extensive color-coding is a critical element of the program. Please bring 4 colored markers or pencils in blue, green, red and black.
